The Leggett + Silver Spring Recreation and Aquatic Center (SSRAC) redefines the concept of "community" for all Silver Spring residents. Comprising multiple projects under one umbrella, it is a senior living housing for residents with a mixture of affordable and market-rate units, a regional recreation and aquatic center, and also a health clinic. The residential component offers 267 high-end, luxury and affordable one-bedroom apartments with well-appointed finishes and appliances. The SSRAC includes multiple swimming pools, gyms, exercise and weight room spaces, movement and dance studios, multipurpose activity rooms, public use and social spaces, and a culinary arts kitchen. The health clinic is owned and operated by Holy Cross Hospital and provides primary medical care, physical exams, and chronic disease management.
The KGD project team worked closely with current residents and the community at large throughout the whole design process to meet the needs of those in this area of Montgomery County, Maryland. It demonstrates a commitment to the residents’ wellbeing through the integration of high indoor air quality standards with natural light, open space, and restorative elements in both the residential and recreational components. In the past few months, the project has earned the AIA Potomac Valley Commendation Award for Multifamily Architecture as well as NAIOP DC|MD’s Award of Excellence for a Multifamily Project in Montgomery County, Maryland. It has also been praised for its commitment to community-focused design and having a strong/positive social impact.
Most importantly, this project reflects KGD's emphasis on community-driven design, prioritizing inclusivity, community engagement, and connection. Scroll below for the link to see our image carousel on Instagram for this incredible project.
