The challenge was to create a 1 million square foot campus with mission critical, anti-terrorism features for this federally funded research and development center. The design creates a 26-acre preserve, using the forest as a security buffer that also provides a sanctuary to employees. A restored stream is fed by rain gardens and channels incorporated into a plaza that covers secure underground conferencing facilities, a data center, and generators.
