Located in the North End of Old Town Alexandria this site is an end lot bounded by North Royal Street, 3rd Street and North Fairfax street. The location allows Potomac River views from the upper level. One of the challenges was the proximity to the Warehouse across from 3rd Street and the power plant beyond. The challenge was to design a contemporary building in an area surrounded by historic townhouses.
KGD Architecture created the master plan and urban design working closely with the building owner and the planners at the City of Alexandria. KGD designed the building which was completed in 2014.
The Printers Row exteriors draw from the mix of industrial buildings and historic townhomes scattered throughout Old Town. The scale of the development was modulated by creating three structures to fit the established community of four story homes, and warehouse across the street. An elevated pocket park was created above a partial underground parking garage. Retail use was created in at one corner of the development. The development features expansive roof terraces from river facing townhouses.
