KGD Architecture has worked with the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) for more than a decade related to the creation of a campus with three buildings at the Mark Center in Alexandria. IDA had previously considered relocating their headquarters to a location closer to the Metro to provide their employees easier access to mass transit.
The project began with consolidation of several regional offices to IDA’s 260,000 SF headquarters building at Mark Center. KGD Architecture was able to apply modern workspace planning while respecting existing space standards. Using a careful phasing plan in lieu of conventional restacking, KGD and general contractor James G. Davis Construction were able to minimize disturbance to the tenants in place while refreshing elevator lobbies, fitting out 60,000 SF of new space and creating new collaborative workspaces.
Looking towards the future, IDA retained KGD Architecture to develop an expanded Masterplan for their headquarters, including two new office buildings totaling 360,000 SF. The new spaces have been designed to include a 400-person auditorium and conference center as well as secured and special construction and five levels of below-grade parking.
